Getting around in Amsterdam

Arrival to the 3E Conference

The AUAS Amstel Campus is in Amsterdam. The city centre is about 5 minutes away by metro. Schiphol Airport is about 20 minutes away by metro and train. The Amstel Campus is about 8 minutes by metro from the Central Station. The AUAS Amstel Campus is in between metro stations “Weesperplein’ and ‘Wibautstraat’ served with metro lines 51, 53 and 54.

Three words: rent a bike! Amsterdam is best explored by bicycle. Moving around the city by bicycle is the most sustainable and enjoyable method of transportation in Amsterdam. Just one important tip while adventuring through the city on a bike: be aware of your surroundings and do not stand still in the middle of a bike lane.

It is important that you park the rented bicycle in a bicycle rack or in a bicycle shed; bicycles may not be parked on the street or on the sidewalk.

The rental can be done at the Macbike locations themselves or online (see addresses below).

Urban public transport

The Amsterdam local tram and metro system, GVB, has an app and offers single tickets and 24-hour or 72-hour tickets. More info here: https://reisproducten.gvb.nl/en/uur-en-dagkaarten

We suggest buying a public transport chipcard at a main train station or Schiphol Airport. The public transport system in the Netherlands is quite efficient, but the payment scheme needs some improvement. You can pay for all public transport using a public transport chipcard, on which you put an amount of money by prepayment.

This year a system to pay with your bank card or the bank app in your phone has been introduced. More information here: https://ovpay.nl/en/how-it-works
