Travel by train to/from The Netherlands
The Dutch railway company is called NS, its local website is www.ns.nl; and the international website is https://www.nsinternational.com/en. NS has a useful app that includes all public transport connections in the country and where you can buy and load your purchased tickets.
International train travel options include:
- the Thalys train to Brussels and Paris (see thalys.com)
- the Eurostar train to London (see Eurostar.com).
- the ICE fast trains to Germany (bookable on bahn.de)
- the Nightjet overnight trains to Switzerland and Austria (https://www.nightjet.com/en/reiseziele/niederlande/amsterdam)
One of the best websites on international train travel in our opinion is ‘The man in seat 61’: https://www.seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Amsterdam.htm
Travel by plane
From Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central Station, there are direct trains running every 15 minutes; and direct buses which even run every half an hour throughout the night. You can also look for alternatives like Rotterdam-The Hague Airport or Eindhoven Airport, which are somewhat further away (1 to 2 hours to Amsterdam) but still well connected by train to Amsterdam.
